Volkel 2023 – Peace Camp

The F-35 and F-16 fighter-bombers at Volkel air base emit over 10 tons of CO2 per flight hour practicing to bomb the world with new, even ‘better’ nuclear bombs in the next war. And when those nuclear bombs are used, it is very harmful to the climate and to all life on earth.

Globally, the military sector is estimated to generate around six per cent of all CO2 emissions. However, military emissions were kept out of the Kyoto protocol & Paris agreements. We desire a world without any military CO2 emissions and until that time, we demand the global military CO2 emissions to be included in the IPCC calculations & follow up Paris agreements.

The military is an important pillar of a rapacious system. If we want system change, we should not only look at the massive military CO2 footprint, but also look at the role the military plays in systems of dominance and imagine & live other ways to share this planet with all creatures large & small.

Activists from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the United States and possibly other countries get together for these days of action. By our actions we practice nonviolent resistance against the death machine.

In all actions during this week we adhere to the nonviolent guidelines.

The Peace Camp Volkel 2023 is organized by the people from Jeanette Noel Catholic Worker in Amsterdam, NL.

Hiroshima Commemoration

On Sunday, August 6th, starting at 10:00 am at the main gate of the air base we commemorate the victims of the bombing of Hiroshima. We will read testimonies of survivors, have silence and fold & hang paper cranes on the fence to express our resolution: never again!

Blockade

On Monday August 7th, starting at noon, when all over the Netherlands the sirens of the monthly air raid drill howl, we will block two gates of the air base. We hope to block the gates one minute for every year since 1945. So we block the base for 78 minutes to express our hope that the base will be closed forever and life on this planet can flourish without nuclear weapons and military pollution.

We hope more people will come to help close the gates!

There will be an action-bus leaving from 8:30 Amsterdam Sloterdijk in the morning and travel via 10:00 Den Bosch Central Station to
11:00 Volkel AFB and back, hopefully when all blockaders are released. We kindly ask you to sign up for the bus through this form. Join the signal for more info: https://ap.lc/QggP7

Digging for life with pink shovels

On Nagasaki Day, Wednesday August 9th we dig one or more tunnels under the fence with the intention of sitting on the runway to stop practicing for war & global destruction.

Send shovels

You can’t be there in August, but would like to support us? Then send us your pink shovels in advance, e.g. with a peace message. We will be happy to use these shovels at Volkel Air Base!
